The Natural Resources Commission approved the 2007 fall wild turkey hunting season dates and license quotas at their monthly meeting last week in East Lansing.
A total of 59,050 (12,350 General and 46,700 Private Land) licenses will be made available through a lottery in the following 12 management units: G, GB, GC, HA, HB, J, L, M, Q, T, W and WA. Approximately 38,957 square miles of area will be open to fall wild turkey hunting.
In the Upper Peninsula, hunt units M, N and O have been combined to form hunt unit M this fall, using the same boundary lines used for the spring season. The quota of general licenses available for hunt unit M has changed to reflect the expanded area that is open for turkey hunting.
"The goals set by the department incorporate the social and biological carrying capacity within these turkey management units," said Al Stewart, DNR upland game bird specialist. "License quotas are developed to harvest the desired number of turkeys to the meet the management goal."
The application period is July 1 to Aug. 1. Hunters may apply for a turkey hunting license at any authorized license agent, at DNR Operations Service Centers or online at www.michigan.gov/dnr using the E-License system. Those who apply must pay a nonrefundable application fee of $4, which does not include the cost of the license.
During the application process, it is important that hunters verify their customer ID (Michigan Driver License, DNR Sportcard or state of Michigan ID card) numbers. An incorrect customer ID number will cause individuals to become ineligible for a license.
Hunters may use MasterCard, VISA, American Express or Discover when applying for a license online at the DNR E-License system, available 24 hours a day during the application period.
If any licenses remain after the drawing, unsuccessful applicants may purchase one leftover license in person at any license agent on a first-come, first-served basis for a one-week period beginning Sept. 10. Any licenses that remain as of Sept. 17 will be available for purchase over the counter by any hunter, including individuals who did not apply for a fall wild turkey license. These licenses will be sold until the quota is met.
