Antlerless deer permits, required for all hunters who take deer with antlers 3 inches or less, are available. According to MassWildlife Permit Specialist Lori Cookman, there will be no permits available for sale in Deer Management Zones (DMZs) 1, 2, 4N, 4S, 5, 6, and 12, as all available permits were issued through the earlier application and drawing process. Permits will be available for DMZs 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13 and 14. Cookman will determine the over-the-counter permit allocations once all permits issued through the drawing process have been tallied.
Sportsmen and women are reminded, new this year, they may purchase only one permit/DMZ. A second permit for the same zone cannot be issued until the first permit is used to tag an antlerless deer. Hunters who received a permit through the drawing process may also purchase one additional permit over the counter for the same zone in which they received a permit. The only exceptions are permit purchases for DMZ 10, 13 and 14. For Zone 10, hunters may purchase 1 permit/day, for Zones 13 and 14, hunters may purchase 2 permits/day.
Permit sales will occur at the following locations: MassWildlife District offices in Acton, Belchertown, Pittsfield, West Boylston and the Field Headquarters in Westboro. Due to long lines last year, permit sales in southeastern Massachusetts for the week of October 6-10 will be relocated to the larger venue of the Myles Standish State Forest Interpretive Center in Carver. Beginning October 14, permit sales will end at Myles Standish and resume at the MassWildlife Bourne office.
Hunters who purchased a hunting or sporting license through the Internet on the MassOutdoors website (www.mass.gov/massoutdoors) will be able to purchase on-line permits in all DMZ's where permits are available. MassOutdoors license buyers will not be able to purchase their first additional permit at a MassWildlife office as long as permits are available through MassOutdoors; it must be done through the Internet. The number of permits allocated by DMZ for sale through MassOutdoors will be proportional to the total number of applicants in each DMZ.
