The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife and Heritage Service will open Prather's Neck Wildlife Management Area in southern Washington County on January 16.

"The property offers excellent hunting and wildlife-associated recreation," said Karina Blizzard, Associate Director of the Wildlife and Heritage Service.

Since the purchase of the 204-acre parcel in 2006 with Program Open Space Funds, a parking lot designed to hold ten vehicles has been installed to accommodate hunters. Parking will be restricted to this single parking lot on a first come basis.

Prather's Neck Wildlife Management Area may be accessed by traveling south on Route 56 from Clear Spring, turning left onto Four Locks Road and then continuing onto Ankeney Lane. Ankeney Lane ends at the designated hunter parking lot. For more information contact The Wildlife and Heritage Service, Indian Springs Work Center at 301-842-2702.

Hunters are reminded that the public land code for checking deer and turkey in for Prather's Neck is 269. For more information on seasons and bag limits, visit http://www.dnr.state.md.us/huntersguide/index.asp.

Predator Hunting on the Manitoba Prairie
As a young lad growing up in any rural area can tell you, predators are a part of life, whether you like it or not. I was introduced to a form of predator control at an early age, my father always used to run a small trap line, nothing special, just a bunch of snares and a few foot traps set out on only the most popularly used predator trails. My old man was always on the lookout for a new spot to set up traps and was usually right on the money when he returned to see if his hunch was correct. His personal best was 8 coyotes and one red fox, which he managed to collect during a 2 - day period about 20 years ago, it seems the tradition is bred into our heritage. This is the story of how my brothers and I tied my dad's personal best.
