The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Wildlife and
Heritage Service (WHS) reminds hunters that applications for the 2006 black bear
hunting season lottery will be accepted online August 1 through September 1.
Hunters may also apply by telephone between August 28 and September 1.
The hunt will take place October 23-28 and December 4-9 in all of Garrett and
Allegany counties. DNR has established a harvest objective of 35-55 bears for
the 2006 season. Once the harvest objective is reached, the hunting season will
be closed.
DNR will issue 220 bear hunting permits this season through a random drawing
process. Successful applicants will be required to attend an informational
pre-hunt meeting prior to receiving their bear hunting permits. Each successful
applicant may designate one sub-permittee who may also participate in the hunt.
In addition, the applicant may also designate a landowner as a sub-permittee
while the hunter is hunting on his or her land; however, only one black bear may
be harvested by the permitted hunting team.
All applicants will have an equal chance at the drawing regardless of how they
apply. Applications will be accepted online at
http://blackbear.dnr.state.md.us/
beginning at 9 a.m. on August 1. Online applications will be received 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week through 6 p.m. on September 1. Applications will also be
accepted over the phone from August 28 through September 1, Monday through
Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 1-888-579-6768.
Each applicant must pay a $15 nonrefundable application fee and may only enter
once. Applicants must posses a valid Hunter Safety Certificate, have held a
hunting license prior to July 1, 1977, or previously hunted on private property.
The drawing will be held on September 2 and successful applicants will be
notified shortly thereafter by mail. Additionally, all applicants may check
their status online using their confirmation number.
From Coyotes to Crows After our month long archery season in Oregon ended, my husband and I hadn't gotten enough hunting in. Since I was the only one that got a deer, and he had to wait until late season to try and archery hunt again, we had to find something to fill our time. Our friend had just gotten a new coyote caller, and we thought we would give it a try. We had seen a few coyotes when we were archery hunting and thought the area would be good to try, who knows, maybe we would see that bear we had on our game camera.
