Maryland Turkey Season Begins Oct 25th
Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources

Posted on: 10/22/08 [Comments?]

Maryland's fall turkey season opens Saturday, Oct. 25 and continues through Nov. 1, 2008. Fall turkey hunting is only permitted in Garrett, Allegany, and Washington Counties, with a bag limit of one turkey per hunter.

"Wild turkey numbers have rebounded in the western counties in recent years, giving fall hunters a greater chance for success," said Bob Long, DNR's Wildlife & Heritage Service, Upland Game Project Leader. "Surveys conducted by field staff this summer suggest that turkey populations remain high in these counties due to another year of good poult production. DNR surveys also show that this year's acorn crop is poor overall, which should keep turkeys widely distributed."

Although fluorescent orange is not required for turkey hunters, DNR highly recommends wearing a fluorescent orange hat while moving and tying an orange ribbon around a tree at calling locations. Always positively identify your target and never stalk or sneak up on turkey sounds; it may be another hunter.

Successful hunters must immediately place a field tag on their turkey and complete the Maryland Big Game Harvest Record. Hunters must then register their turkey within 24 hours by calling 1-888-800-0121 or registering online at www.gamecheck.dnr.state.md.us. Hunters will receive a confirmation number that must also be recorded on the hunter's Big Game Harvest Record.

Complete turkey regulations and registration procedures can be found in the 2008-2009 Guide to Hunting & Trapping, issued with each hunting license or online at www.dnr.maryland.gov/huntersguide.
