Maryland DNR Hosts Hunter Contest

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife and Heritage Service (WHS) encourages hunters to enter the 2007 Maryland Hunter Contest, where participants can win a free 2008-2009 hunting license and the grand prize winner will receive a $500 gift certificate.

The Maryland Hunter Contest runs during the 2-week firearm season, November 24 through December 8, 2007. Contestants may visit participating agent stores to fill out contest entry cards and drop it into the official collection box. After the firearm season, one winner will be selected per individual location will receive a complimentary Maryland hunting license for the 2008-2009 hunting season. Those winners will then be entered into the statewide grand prize drawing for the $500 gift certificate donated by the Maryland Sportsman's Association. The statewide grand prize drawing will take place in late December.

"The contest is designed to encourage hunters to visit local businesses who have served as long-standing hunting and wildlife management partners with DNR," said Bob Beyer, Associate Director for DNR’s Wildlife and Heritage Service. "The contest aims to thank outdoor retailers and hunters for their long-standing support of wildlife management programs in Maryland and reinvigorating some of the camaraderie of the former check station model."

Last year's grand prize winner was Shawna Whitby. Ms. Whitby entered the contest at East Coast Taxidermy in Hurlock and used her gift certificate at that location. An additional 36 hunters won a free hunting license for the 2007-2008 hunting season.

Louisiana Deer Hunt Success for 10 Year Old
10 year old Mallory Jennings of Louisiana killed her 1st deer on a 2008 Thanksgiving hunting trip in Winnfield, Louisiana. The 7 point weighed in at 165 pounds and had a 22 1/4 inch tip spread. She used a 7mm 08, youth model rifle and was accompanied by her dad, Brent Jennings.
