A Feral Hog Population Assessment Survey is available on the LSU AgCenter's Web site to collect and analyze data to help determine the scope of the feral hog problem in Louisiana. To participate in the survey follow this link: click for survey.

The survey was developed jointly by the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) to document the damage caused by feral hogs and also guide research needs to address the problem. The survey deadline is March 1.

"We want to encourage all landowners to please respond to this survey. The survey consists of 17 straightforward questions, and should only take a short time to complete," said Nan Huff, LDWF wildlife disease coordinator. "The information from these surveys will help us design wildlife programs to help control the feral hog population and the problems they create."

The LSU AgCenter will compile the data and summarize the results in an upcoming issue of Louisiana Wildlife News.

Predator Hunting on the Manitoba Prairie
As a young lad growing up in any rural area can tell you, predators are a part of life, whether you like it or not. I was introduced to a form of predator control at an early age, my father always used to run a small trap line, nothing special, just a bunch of snares and a few foot traps set out on only the most popularly used predator trails. My old man was always on the lookout for a new spot to set up traps and was usually right on the money when he returned to see if his hunch was correct. His personal best was 8 coyotes and one red fox, which he managed to collect during a 2 - day period about 20 years ago, it seems the tradition is bred into our heritage. This is the story of how my brothers and I tied my dad's personal best.
