Bad Eyesight Results In Taking Illegal Deer
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries

Posted on: 11/11/02 [Comments?]

On October 14, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division Senior Agent Curtis Belton investigated a report of an illegal deer kill in the Jones Road area of Vernon Parish. The illegally killed doe deer and a spent 30-30 caliber cartridge were located. After seizing the deer and cartridge and obtaining a description of the violator, Belton returned to the Jones Road area where he located Billy Jay Jones, 67, of Deridder.

Jones admitted to killing the deer. The suspect allegedly stated that when the deer came close he looked to see if it was a buck or a doe. Even though he said he could not tell, he shot it anyway, adding that his eyesight is bad.

Jones was then issued a citation for taking an illegal deer during open season, which carries a fine of no more than $750, and jail for no more than 30 days. Jones was also issued a civil restitution citation for $524.54, the replacement cost of the deer. The deer was donated to charity and Jones' rifle was seized as evidence.

Central Kansas Buck
This Central Kansas Buck was shot on opening weekend with my father, Tom Williams near Tescott, Kansas. I walked approximately ΒΌ mile to get into position, in water way, at the end of a wheat field. My father went to the top of the wheat field to get into position at the other end, 1/2 section of grass and wheat fields. Deer must have noticed my father during the time he was getting into position.
