Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources

Kentucky's Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program marks its tenth anniversary with a special series of workshops being held at the Kentucky 4-H Leadership Center in Jabez, Sept. 19-21. Past graduates of the program are welcome to come back to celebrate.

The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program (BOW) is geared to adult women who want to learn about fishing, boating, shooting, hunting and other wildlife-related activities.

Beth Spivey-Minch, volunteer BOW program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, promises a few special surprises for participants in the September workshops. "You will also get a chance to get your feet wet with some hands-on learning about the basics of all those things people talk about doing outdoors that you'd like to try, too, but just haven't had the right opportunity," she said.

Register by calling Kentucky Fish and Wildlife toll-free at 1-800-858-1549 during regular weekday hours. Those who register before July 30 will receive the early bird price of $130, which includes meals and lodging. Some classes may require an additional fee. After July 30, normal registration fees of $150 for the weekend apply and after August 30, the registration fee increases to $170, plus class fees.

The 4-H Leadership Center is located in Russell County just north of Lake Cumberland.

Classes will include basic and advanced 3-D archery, fishing, fly-tying, nature journaling, turkey hunting, caving, hiking, orienteering, campfire cooking, wildlife and native plant identification, falconry, rifle and shot gunning basics, firearms safety, canoeing, dog training and others. All sessions are designed with beginners in mind, and taught by experienced instructors.

The Jabez BOW Workshop begins with registration at 11 a.m. Eastern time, Friday, Sept. 19 and concludes at noon Sunday, Sept. 21. Participants will select four class sessions during the weekend, with special evening programs and activities also planned.

Visit Kentucky Fish and Wildlife's website at fw.ky.gov for more information about the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program. Registration forms are available on-line. You may also call the department at 1-800-858-1549 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern time to receive a registration form in the mail or to register by phone with a credit card.

Saskatchewan Bear Hunt
Well, my 16 year old son Connor is showing me up again. This is the chocolate bear he took on 5-19-08, two hours into the first day of the hunt. The bear was just over 5 foot and the weight was 170+. Two hours after he took his bear, a large black came in and attacked his bear that was on the ground 10 yards from his stand then went on to the bait. He has photos and video of the action, but the best thing is that I took that same black bear two days later. The black was over 6 foot and the weight was 250+.
