Hunters who applied for the 2008 Kentucky elk quota hunts can now check the results of the drawing online at http://fw.ky.gov/app/ElkQuotaLookup.aspx. Applicants will need to click on "2008 Elk Hunt Draw Results" and enter their social security number, or they can enter their date of birth and 19-digit lottery application number.
Those without Internet access may call the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources at 1-800-858-1549 for assistance.
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife recently conducted a random computer drawing of hunters who purchased an Elk Lottery Application by the April 30 deadline. A total of 33,849 people applied for the 2008 quota elk hunts. The department issued 400 general permits for the drawing this year, in addition to a drawing for two youth hunter permits.
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife began restoring free-ranging elk within a 16-county zone in southeastern Kentucky in 1997. Limited elk hunting began in 2001. Today, the elk herd numbers about 7,300 animals. Firearm quota elk hunts take place each year in October and December.
This year, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife divided the 16-county elk restoration zone into six Elk Hunting Units (EHUs) in order to spread out hunting pressure and better manage the elk population. Drawn hunters will soon need to choose their first, second and third preference for the area they wish to hunt. The department will conduct a second drawing in June to assign hunters to a hunting unit. Drawn hunters will need to hunt on public land, or get permission to hunt private land, within the unit they are assigned. Hunters must hunt within their assigned unit, regardless of public or private land boundaries.
Drawn hunters will soon receive a notification letter from Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, outlining the steps they need to take. In addition to choosing a hunting unit, drawn hunters must send payment to the department for their quota elk hunt permit. Permits cost $30 for Kentucky residents and $365 for nonresidents. Quota elk hunters must also possess an annual Kentucky hunting license. The 2008 quota elk hunts will begin in October. For bull elk, the one-week firearms season is Oct. 4-10. Archery season is Oct. 4, 2008 through Jan. 19, 2009. Crossbow season is Oct. 4-19, and from Nov. 8 – Dec. 31.
For cow elk, the firearms season is Dec. 13-26. Archery season is Oct. 11, 2008 through Jan. 19, 2009. Crossbow season is Oct. 11-19, and from Nov. 8 – Dec. 31.
