Nearly 800 acres of fields and forests in western Kentucky are now open to the public. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources announced the acquisition of 795 acres of bottomland woods and farmland along the Carlisle-Ballard County line.
"People need wide open places where they can hunt, fish or just wander around and enjoy nature with their families," said Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett. "We're working to provide these opportunities, and proud to announce this latest in a long line of land acquisitions for public use."
Kentucky's newest wildlife management area (WMA) is named the Coil Estate WMA, in honor of the family who donated the property. There is no hunting on 435 acres on the western side of the property due to deed restrictions. Hiking and wildlife viewing are permitted on this section, however.
The remaining 360 acres on the eastern side of the property are open under statewide regulations to all hunting. This includes the ongoing spring turkey season and modern gun season for deer in November. Access to all the property is by foot travel only. Coil Estate WMA has a variety of wildlife, including turkey, deer and small game. The property consists of actively farmed fields, hardwood forests, and several creeks.
The WMA is located five miles northwest of Bardwell. Approximate boundaries include Coil Road to the south, Mayfield Creek to the north and Truman Creek to the east. Two parking areas are located off Coil Road, just north of U.S. 51.
