The Riley County Fish and Game Association, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), and the Tuttle Creek Lake Corps of Engineers are seeking participants for the 6th Annual Tuttle Creek Youth/Disabled Deer Hunt, which will be held Sept. 13-14. Youth 16 years old and younger and anyone with a Disability Assistance Permit issued by KDWP are eligible. In addition, a Kansas hunting license, a deer permit, and an approved hunter education course (for those who are 16) are required.

Assistance fulfilling these requirements, as well as scholarships to purchase a hunting license and deer permit, may be provided by the sponsoring agencies and associations. For those who do not have one, a rifle and ammunition will be provided. Each participant will also be placed with an experienced hunter as a guide. Successful hunters will be put in touch with area lockers where processing will be handled free of charge.

Other items provided for this hunt include accessible hunting blinds, hunting locations, hunter orange hats and vests, and transportation to the field. All participants will be required to attend a firearm safety presentation and sight-in at the Fancy Creek Range on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m., so participants should register as soon as possible.

Those who wish to participate should phone Steve Prockish at the Tuttle Creek Corps of Engineers office, 785-539-8511, ext. 3167.

First Deer on Massachusetts Hunt
This is my first deer and I got him on December 9, 2008 as I was driving home from work in Gramby Massachusetts. I had seen him in the field I have been scouting. So I went home, got my gear and got into the woods. I had him at 75 yards with my shotgun but didn't take the shot so I waited.
