The Department of Natural Resources has awarded to the Lake Station Parks Department a grant to construct an archery range in Riverview Park. The grant is for $95,250 with a match of $31,750 from Lake Station. The total project cost will be $127,000.

The archery range will include target houses, target butts, safety fences, access routes, range officer shelter, parking and site amenities.

The DNR Shooting Range Program is a federal grant program that provides 75 percent matching assistance to local units of government and not-for-profit agencies. The grants provide funding for shooting range development and improvement projects that will be open to the public.

The monies for the program come from the Federal Aid to Wildlife Restoration Act, commonly referred to as the Pittman-Robertson Program. The funds are collected by taxes on rifles, shotguns, handguns, ammunition, and archery equipment.

The DNR’s divisions of outdoor recreation, fish and wildlife, and law enforcement as well as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service work together in a cooperative effort to make the federal funds available to local agencies and organizations for their local projects.

Julie and Tom's Texas Pig Hunt
When Julie, my wife, over heard me talking with a hunting buddy about going hog hunting in Texas she expressed an interest in going also. Julie bird hunts with me all the time but never expressed an interest in bigger game. I jumped at the chance to get her ready for our Texas hog hunt. Since most of my rifles carry a pretty stout kick I decided to do some research and come up with a new 'outfit' for Julie's first hog hunt.
