Indiana DNR Asks Hunters to Feed Hungry
Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources

Posted on: 11/20/06 [Comments?]

This fall, DNR officials are asking Indianapolis-area deer hunters to help feed the hungry by donating their harvests to the Hunters Feeding the Hungry program. The DNR is partnering with Second Helpings and Prison Enterprises Network (PEN) Products to make this possible.

Refrigerated trucks, courtesy of Second Helpings, will be stationed at The Outdoorsman Sport Shop, 1010 S. State Route 135, Greenwood, and the Knightstown Locker, 8037 S. 575 W., east of Knightstown. Both of these businesses are official deer check stations and will be accepting deer on each Saturday and Sunday of the deer firearm season, Nov. 18 to Dec. 3.

At the conclusion of each weekend, Second Helpings will pick up their refrigerated trucks and deliver the donated deer to the Pendleton Reformatory where PEN Products will process the deer. The processed deer will then be returned to Second Helpings for distribution to local missions, food pantries and others.

DNR Director Kyle Hupfer said, "What a great opportunity this is for hunters to help keep Indiana's deer herd in check and provide wonderful meals for Indiana's less fortunate. This is truly a win-win situation. The donation program is free to hunters and the processing of the deer is being provided free of charge by PEN Products."

Arkansas Double-Bearded Tom
My morning started out the same as the past mornings in south Arkansas. No birds gobbling at daylight, so I sat listening. Not a sound in ear range for more than two hours. Trying all the calls in my pack with my alum slate in hand. There he was 300 yards away talking back, then 200 yards.
