Illinois Hunters are Reminded to Register Their Harvest
Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources

Posted on: 01/03/07 [Comments?]

Hunters successful in taking deer in Stephenson County during the upcoming Late-Winter Antlerless-only Deer Season (Jan. 12-14, 2007) are reminded that they must register deer they harvest through DNR Direct, the Illinois Department of Natural Resouces' (IDNR) automated online and telephone harvest registration system used by hunters throughout the state. The harvest reporting requirement through DNR Direct will include those hunters using unfilled Stephenson County firearm and muzzleloader permits from the 2006 seasons.

Firearm hunters with permits for Stephenson County who harvested deer during the firearm seasons in 2006 registered their harvest at the county check station at the Stephenson County Fairgrounds. That check station - used during the firearm season for chronic wasting disease sampling - will not be open during the Late-Winter season.

Hunters successful in taking a deer during the Late-Winter season in Stephenson County should register their harvest online through the IDNR web site at http://dnr.state.il.us/admin/systems/ or toll-free at 1-866-ILCHECK (1-866-452-4325) by 10 p.m. on the day they take the deer.

Stephenson County hunters using the automated registration system should be prepared to answer a series of questions about their deer. These include a measurement of the distance in millimeters (25 millimeters = one inch) from the rear edge of the nostril opening to the front corner of the eye. Hunters will also need to write down a 10-character confirmation number on the leg tag (a fine-point permanent marker works best for this purpose). Those hunters planning to take their antlerless deer for mounting will also need to write the confirmation number onto the other tag (labeled "Check Station Tag") to accompany the deer head to the taxidermist.

The only counties in which check stations will be open during the January deer seasons in Illinois are Boone, DeKalb, McHenry, Ogle and Winnebago counties, where hunters will participate in the Special CWD Antlerless-only Deer Season, Jan. 12-14, 2007.

South African Blesbucks
I was several days into a 10-day hunt in the Groot Winterhook mountains of South Africa's eastern cape. I already had an nyala, duiker, eland, baboon, 3 black wildebeest, 2 blue wildebeest, a black springbok and a mountain reedbuck. Next on my list was a blesbuck pair, one male and one female.
