The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is offering a free hunter safety course in Leon County.

The course will be in the second-floor conference room of the Farris Bryant Building, 620 S. Meridian St., Tallahassee. Instruction is from 6 to 9 p.m. July 14, 16, 21 and 23. The range portion of the class will be on July 25.

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. The FWC encourages students to bring a pencil and paper with them to take notes.

The hunter safety course is required before anyone born on or after June 1, 1975, can purchase a Florida hunting license. The FWC course satisfies hunter safety training requirements for all other states and Canadian provinces.

People interested in attending this course can register online and obtain information about future hunter safety classes in the Hunter Safety area of MyFWC.com or by calling the FWC's regional office in Panama City at 850-265-3676.

Big Oregon Roosevelt Elk
It was 4:45 am on the Oregon coast this last November, and we are all getting ready to head out and position ourselves in spots that we think may put us in the best position to track down the herd of elk that came out of our fields the night before. We'd seen a group of about 30 head breaking into smaller groups and heading out of the fields and into the woods no less then 5 minutes before we were ready to leave.
