Connecticut Dept. of Environmental Protection

Posted on: 02/25/08 [Comments?]

Spring is just around the corner and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced that a Wild Turkey Hunting Safety Seminar is scheduled for Saturday, April 5.

This is an annual event coordinated by the DEP's Conservation Education/Firearms Safety (CE/FS) Program and the public is invited to attend. The seminar is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Fairfield County Fish and Game Protective Association, 310 Hammertown Road, Monroe. The program is free-of-charge.

"Whether you are an experienced or first time turkey hunter or just want to learn more about the elusive wild turkey in Connecticut, the seminar has something to offer," said David Kubas, Coordinator of the CE/FS Program.

Topics of discussion will include the current status of the wild turkey population in Connecticut, hunting safety tips, and hunting techniques, including calling. Hunters may bring the shotgun and ammunition they plan to use for turkey hunting for patterning on paper targets (optional and weather permitting).

Presenters include certified CE/FS instructors, Ray Hanley, Gary Bennett, and Del DelMastro, and DEP Wildlife Division biologists, Michael Gregonis and Peter Picone. All presenters have extensive turkey hunting experience.

Interested individuals must register for the seminar by contacting the DEP Wildlife Division's Sessions Woods office at 860-675-8130, Mondays through Fridays, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

The Old Man and the Hound
Jack drove his old jeep down the dirt road carefully. Since no one lived along this road anymore but old Tom, the highway department seldom serviced it. He guessed it didn't really matter much as old Tom didn't drive much anymore. Perhaps once a month when his retirement check came in. Then he would come into town driving that old rickety truck and cash his check, buy some groceries and collect his mail.
