Colorado DOW Seeking Info on Poaching
Colorado Division of Wildlife

Posted on: 09/28/07 [Comments?]

The Colorado Division of Wildlife is seeking information that might help solve a poaching incident on the south end of the Uncompahgre Plateau in Game Management Unit 61 west of Montrose.

Sometime around Sept. 20 an unknown party shot a large mule deer buck, removed the head, and left the carcass to rot. The buck was shot with a high-powered rifle near the intersection of Dave Wood Road and Divide Road.

The animal was killed during archery season and several bow hunters were in the area at the time.

Any one having any information regarding this incident can call District Wildlife Manager Mark Caddy at 970-327-4489 or Operation Game Thief at 1-877-265-6648. Tips can be provided anonymously. Anyone who provides information and is willing to testify about the incident could receive a buck tag for Unit 61 in the future under the TIP(Turn In Poachers) program.

I harvested this gobbler on May 6, 2008 at 5:45 in the morning. My partner and I walked across an open field to get set up long before sunrise, but the bird started gobbling at 5:20. Go set up with B-mobile strutting tom decoy and she mobile hen decoy. We were literally set up in some brush just sitting on our knees (no big trees) when we heard the bird fly down and start triple gobbling to the light yelps and purrs I gave him.
