Colorado DOW Habitat Partnership Program Apps Available
Colorado Division of Wildlife

The Habitat Partnership Program (HPP) of the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) is announcing a new grant program that provides funding for efforts to improve wildlife and livestock forage through habitat projects. Applications for the Habitat Improvement Grant Program are available on-line at www.wildlife.state.co.us/landwater/privatelandprograms/hpp/ or through local HPP Committee members.

"The goal of HPP is to reduce wildlife conflicts with agricultural activities," explained Pat Tucker, HPP Coordinator. "While there are plenty of good habitat projects to be done out there, we're looking for those large projects that can help reduce conflict between agricultural landowners and big game wildlife."

HPP frequently funds projects to improve habitat, but this is the first time the State Council has issued a grant application to encourage additional large-scale projects to come forward.

The Habitat Partnership Program was established by the Colorado General Assembly and the Colorado Wildlife Commission in 1990 with the goal of creating a partnership with landowners, land managers, sportsmen and the DOW to minimize agricultural landowner conflicts with big game animals. The program is guided by a statewide council but local committees identify, prioritize, fund and implement solutions. HPP receives five-percent of the DOW revenue from the sale of big game hunting licenses in the areas where the local committees are established.

Typical habitat improvement projects include burning, weed control, water development, fertilization, seeding and mechanical brush treatments. Other types of habitat improvement projects are welcome to apply under the grant program. To leverage other funds with the grant funding, priority will be given to projects proposed by multiple partnering individuals and/or agencies.

Applications for the Habitat Improvement Grant Program are due by Sept. 1, 2008. Grants will be awarded in December. Projects utilizing grant money must be completed prior to Dec. 31, 2011.

South African Blesbucks
I was several days into a 10-day hunt in the Groot Winterhook mountains of South Africa's eastern cape. I already had an nyala, duiker, eland, baboon, 3 black wildebeest, 2 blue wildebeest, a black springbok and a mountain reedbuck. Next on my list was a blesbuck pair, one male and one female.
