The California Department of Fish and Game's (DFG) Game Bird Heritage Program is providing several Dove and Quail hunts during September and November. The hunts are an effort by DFG to increase public hunting opportunities in southern California.

Three hunts are scheduled in Peace Valley, Los Angeles County, and four hunts at Rancho Jamul, San Diego County, on Sept. 1-2. Two more hunts are scheduled at Rancho Jamul on Nov. 18-19. The deadline to apply to be included in the random public drawing is Aug. 7, 2006 by 5 p.m.

Those interested can call the number listed below to request an application, or go to www.dfg.ca.gov/hunting/gbh and download a form.

Submit applications to:
Special Dove/Quail Hunts
4665 Lampson Ave. Suite C
Los Alamitos, CA 90720

Hunters may apply once, and make up to nine hunt selections. An applicant has the possibility for being drawn for one hunt only. Successful applicants will receive a confirmation letter and directions approximately 10 days prior to the hunt.

Rhode Island Deer Hunt
My father has been teaching me how to hunt since I was little. Already this season he had taken 2 bucks. The first one he took on Saturday opening day, with his muzzleloader and the second he took on Monday, with his bow. He had been teasing me all week that I was going to be eating pasta while he chomped down on tasty venison. Well that was about to change.
