Hunts scheduled for the 2006-07 season at Lake Sonoma include wild turkey hunts sponsored by the Department of Fish and Game (DFG), and wild pig archery and crossbow hunts sponsored by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps). Wild pig hunt information is available from the Corps at (707) 433-9483, extension 20. Turkey hunt schedules and drawing information follows.

2006-2007 Turkey Hunts: There are four two-day turkey hunts scheduled during the 2006-07 season. Two hunts are scheduled for fall 2006, and two hunts for spring 2007.

Ten hunters will be drawn for each hunt, and each hunter can take one hunting guest. Junior hunters must possess a junior hunting license, and can take either another licensed junior hunter or a licensed adult hunter. A non-hunting adult must accompany two junior hunters.

Fall 2006 Turkey Hunts:

• Liberty Glen: Junior Hunt Saturday/Sunday, Nov. 11 and 12, 2006
• Yorty Creek: Adult Hunt Saturday/Sunday, Nov. 18 and 19, 2006

DFG must receive all applications in the Yountville Regional Office by 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006. The drawing will be held on Friday, Oct. 20, 2006.

Spring 2007 Turkey Hunts:

• Liberty Glen: Junior Hunt: Saturday/Sunday, March 31 and April 1, 2007
• Yorty Creek: Adult Hunt: Saturday/Sunday, April 7 and 8, 2007

DFG must receive all applications in the Yountville Regional Office by 5 p.m., Thursday, March 8, 2007. The drawing will be held on Friday, March 9, 2007.

The two-day turkey hunts for 2005-06 resulted in 54 hunters taking nine wild turkeys, with an overall success rate of 17 percent. Twenty-five junior hunters took four turkeys for a 16 percent success rate, and 29 adult hunters took five turkeys for a 17 percent success rate. Heavy fall rains resulted in lower hunter pressure and success. These hunts remain very popular with hunters.

Oregon Successful Bull Elk Hunt
Last fall I got my first bull elk. I was hunting in Oregon in a general hunt area. I had scouted where I wanted to be opening morning. With snow on the ground I feel they can hear you stepping through it, so I didn't go too far. And no tracks were seen. It melted and two days later and went back to my spot.
