The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has scheduled 11 clinics in 2007 throughout California to educate hunters on advanced hunting and wilderness survival techniques. In addition to offering hunters a step beyond basic skills, the clinics help develop ethical and conservation-minded outdoor enthusiasts.
"These clinics developed by the DFG Advanced Hunter Education Program provide the tools for a successful hunt and a safe trek in the wilderness," said Susan Herrgesell, program coordinator. "Each one of these workshops provides essential training for anyone who ventures into the outdoors, not just hunters but anyone who is enthusiastic about the outdoors."
The date, description, location and cost of each clinic are listed as follows:
- Feb. 3-4, Wilderness Survival Clinic offered at Tejon Ranch, southern Kern County. The cost is $60.
- March 3, Turkey Hunting Clinic offered at the Dante Club in Sacramento County. The clinic is free and no registration is necessary.
- April 28, Pig Hunting Clinic offered at Fort Hunter Liggett in Monterey County. The cost is $40.
- May 19-20, Big Game Hunting Clinic offered in Williams, Colusa County. The cost is $60.
- June 2, Pig Hunting Clinic offered in Sonoma. The cost is $40.
- June 16-17, Land Navigation and Wilderness Survival Clinic offered in Shasta-Trinity National Forest at Bushytail Campgrounds. The cost is $60.
- Aug. 4, Pig Hunting Clinic offered at Tejon Ranch in southern Kern County. The cost is $40.
- Sept. 22, Waterfowl Hunting Clinic offered at Wilderness Unlimited Property in Williams, Colusa County. The cost is $40.
- Sept. 22, Upland Game Hunting Clinic offered at the High Desert Hunt Club, near Gorman. The cost is $40.
- Sept. 29, Upland Game Hunting Clinic offered at Wilderness Unlimited Property in Williams, Colusa County. The cost is $40.
- Sept. 30, Waterfowl Hunting Clinic offered at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area, Riverside County. The cost is $40.
Organizers will provide places to camp for clinics lasting more than a day. Participants must provide their own food, tent or RV.
Instructors teach participants how to select the ideal firearm. Additionally, techniques for field dressing will be demonstrated. Wilderness survival and safety, land navigation, ethics, and conservation will also be presented in the clinics.
Individuals interested in attending clinics can print registration forms from DFG's Hunter Education Program Web page at www.dfg.ca.gov/huntclinics. The deadline for registration and fees is two weeks prior to each clinic’s date. Completed forms must be sent with a check for the course's cost to the Department of Fish and Game, Advanced Hunter Education Program, 601 Locust St., Redding, CA 96001.
