The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) and the California Deer Association (CDA) will host an apprentice deer hunt on September 13-14, 2008 at the Carrizo Plain Ecological Reserve.
The apprentice hunt will be for deer only and is open to licensed hunters aged 15 and under. Application deadline is August 14.
Three apprentice hunters will be chosen by drawing to participate. Hunters must be under the supervision of an adult. The hunting opportunity includes classroom instruction on wildlife and hunting, range and field assistance on gun handling, safety and shooting practice, and information on specific techniques for deer hunting and game care. This hunt is designed as an introduction to deer hunting, not a trophy hunt.
The hunt will take place on the 30,000 acre Chimineas Unit at DFG's ecological reserve in San Luis Obispo County. More information is available at: www.dfg.ca.gov/lands/er/region4/carrizo.html
CDA volunteers will guide the participants on their hunts and provide meals for the duration of the 2-day event. Overnight lodging will be available at the main ranch house on the reserve.

All applications must be received at the above address no later than 5 p.m., Aug. 14, 2008. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered in the draw.
Successful applicants will be notified by phone and will receive additional information, including maps and special regulations, prior to their hunt.
