Posted on: 02/25/08 [Comments?]

The Department of Fish and Game's (DFG) Advanced Hunter Education will offer a bear hunting clinic for the first time beginning on March 1. The workshop will be held at the Ono Range in Shasta County, 15 miles west of Redding, and run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The cost of the workshop is $40 and space is limited.

Workshop instructors will discuss bear biology, their habits and habitat. Participants will learn about different techniques in hunting bear, the type of gear needed and the variety of garb necessary, pre-season scouting strategies, signs to look for during scouts, proper shooting positions, and field dressing techniques. Participants also will learn about different dog breeds used in hunts, and view dog hunting demonstrations. Each participant will have the chance to win two black and tan hound pups.

DFG is co-sponsoring the clinic with the Pacific Coast Hunter Education Instructor Association, which will provide lunch for a $5 donation.

Registration forms are available online at www.dfg.ca.gov/huntered/advanced. After registering, each confirmed participant will receive an e-mail with a map to the facility, a list of items to bring, and a workshop agenda.

Bow and Arrow Idaho Bull Moose
I was very fortunate to draw a once in a lifetime Idaho Bull Moose tag this year. My area was just west of Yellowstone National Park, on the Idaho side along the south fork of the Snake river. I elected to stick it out with my bow and arrow, passing up many Bulls that I could have easily shot with a rifle. After 16 days and many many miles of travel the results proved to be colossal.
