Description: The system of grasslands, cienegas, riparian streams and desert mountains found at Buenos Aires NWR provide habitat and travel corridors for a wide variety of wildlife that includes over 300 species of birds and southwestern mammals that include deer, pronghorn, javelina, coati, ringtail cat, mountain lion, badger and occasional jaguar. The refuge is an excellent birding destination with many of the border Arizona specialty birds like gray hawk, buff-collared nightjar, thick-billed kingbird, and Strickland's woodpecker. Directions: To reach western grasslands and refuge headquarters, take hwy 86 west from Tucson. Turn south on Highway 286 at Three Points/Robles Junction. Continue south the milepost 7 and take a left at the sign to refuge headquarters. Follow signs approximatley 3 miles to headquarters and Antelope Drive.To reach nature trails near Arivaca, take I-19 south from of Tucson, take the Amado/Arivaca exit. Take a right off the ramp and a left at the Cow Palace. Continue approximately 20 miles to Arivaca. Trails are located east and west of town at the Wildlife Viewing Areas.
