The Third Annual Archery in the Schools Program State Championship will take place on April 18, 2006, at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Approximately 1,000 students from across Alabama are expected to participate in three divisions: Elementary (grades K-6), Middle (grades 7-8), and High School (grades 9-12). The students will compete in two different flights, 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. An awards ceremony will follow at the conclusion of the competition at approximately 3:30 p.m.
The first championship in 2004 featured 220 students representing 11 schools. Approximately 480 shooters from 20 schools participated in the second annual championship in 2005. This year, 30 schools will be represented.
Alabama’s National Archery in the Schools Program is a partnership between the Alabama Department of Conservation’s Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries and the State Department of Education. Alabama was the second state to implement this program patterned after Kentucky’s highly successful program. The Junior-Olympic Archery Development style program is now being taught in 70 Alabama schools as part of their physical education program.
