Alabama Game & Fish Division

Posted on: 04/12/05 [Comments?]

The second annual “National Archery in the Schools Program” State Championship will be held April 26 at the Autauga County Agricultural Arena in Autaugaville from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Approximately 550 students enrolled in 16 schools from Huntsville to Mobile will compete. Awards will be presented to winners in Elementary (grades K-6), Middle (grades 7-8), and High School (grades 9-12) divisions.

Alabama’s National Archery in the Schools Program is a cooperative effort between the Alabama Department of Conservation’s Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries and the State Department of Education. Forty-five schools have implemented the exciting new curriculum called “Archery – On Target for Life” in the physical education curriculum. The two-week curriculum is not the archery class of old, but a brand new class that provides exciting, alternate activities that couple fun with learning. The program offers all students opportunity to be involved in a life skill that has no barriers. Unlike many activities, participation is not limited by age, gender, or physical abilities. Students of all sizes can easily be involved in archery.

Schools competing this year are Billingsley High (Autauga County), Floyd Middle Magnet (Montgomery County), Isabella High (Chilton County), Sand Rock High (Cherokee County), Hanceville Middle (Cullman County), Alba Middle (Mobile County), Charles Henderson Middle (Pike County), Alex City Middle (Tallapoosa County), Hubbertville High School(Fayette County), Clanton Elementary (Chilton County), McKenzie High (Butler County), Riverton Middle (Madison County), Hewitt Trussville Middle (Jefferson County), Fayette Middle (Fayette County), Sardis High (Etowah County), and Berry Elementary (Fayette County).
