Big Oak Physically Disabled Hunting Area
Alabama Game & Fish Division

Posted on: 01/10/05 [Comments?]

A new hunting area has been added to Alabama’s Hunting and Fishing Trail for People with Physical Disabilities. The Big Oak Physically Disabled Area is a segment of the Choccolocco Wildlife Management Area in Cleburne County. All seasons, bag limits, permitted firearms and archery equipment regulations are the same at Big Oak as those that apply to Choccolocco WMA. Only permitted physically disabled individuals may hunt at Big Oak, but they may bring someone to assist them.

Each hunter must complete an application available from the Wildlife Section, 64 North Union Street, Montgomery, AL 36130 or by calling 334-242-3469. The application process certifies individuals are physically disabled under guidelines established by the American Medical Association, Veterans Administration or the U.S. Social Security Administration. In addition to the physically disabled certificate, hunters must possess a WMA permit and appropriate hunting licenses.

Big Oak is the first site on the trail to offer hunting opportunities other than deer hunting. The 1,700-acre facility is a joint project of the U.S. Forest Service and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Restroom facilities that are handicapped accessible have been built at Big Oak. Some trails have been developed and more are expected in the coming year. In addition, wildlife openings will be planted.

9 Pt. Indiana Archery Buck
On Wednesday 10/22/08 I was late getting into the woods at about 5:45 pm. I did not use a treestand. I found a couple nice rubs and decided to stand in front of a big oak tree that was on the edge of a hill. I decided to do the fawn bleet call as I had used that a couple days prior and called in several does and a button buck. It was windy so when the wind would stop I would get a chance to use the call.
