Registration is open for the next Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshop, October 3-5, 2008. The workshop, sponsored by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR), will be held at the 4-H Center near Columbiana in Shelby County.

BOW, which began in October 1995, is a bi-annual event. The workshop is a three-day adventure offering beginner-level skills training for an array of fun and exciting activities ranging from deer hunting to camp cooking. BOW workshop activities include camping, backyard wildlife, map and compass, mountain biking, shooting sports (pistol, rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader), fishing, hunting, canoeing, nature crafts, archery, ATV handling, motor boat handling, geocaching, bee keeping, and much more. Participants can also obtain their Hunter Education Certification and Boating Safety Certification during the weekend event.

BOW workshops are open to all females 18 years or older. Many past participants return to BOW and often bring someone with them to experience what they have discovered to be a fun-filled weekend of challenging activities in the beautiful outdoors. Attendance regularly includes senior adults, mothers and daughters, co-workers and best friends.

Highly trained ADCNR staff and volunteers serve as instructors. Additionally, participants may bring their personal equipment to use in the various sessions.

The registration fee of $199 covers all meals, dormitory lodging, program materials and instruction. Enrollment is limited to 130 applicants, and classes fill up fast. To register, visit the Department of Conservation's Web site at . Unless sessions are filled earlier, the cutoff for registration is September 26. Once registration is completed, participants will receive a confirmation including a class schedule and driving directions.

Aquatic Tactics for Spring Time Gobblers
Spring time can be a very frustrating time for a college student in Bozeman Montana. Choosing between fishing, hunting, hiking, and spring time skiing can be a really difficult decision. This weekend I opted to head east to hunt down some Merriam turkeys. I had recently gotten private property permission from a friend at school to hunt his family ranch along the Yellowstone River. I was accompanied by my two hunting buddies Keith and George.
