Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced today that managed deer hunts will be held at three locations in Southern Maryland: the Billingsley Tract in Upper Marlboro during the muzzleloader and firearm seasons; the Rosaryville State Park in Upper Marlboro during the firearm season; and, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, also during the firearms season.
Managed hunting programs are a time-proven strategy to manage local deer populations in a safe, cost-effective, and successful manner. Potential hunters will be required to meet several safety and proficiency-related criteria before participating in the hunts.
At the Billingsley Tract, only one hunt date, Oct. 20, will be available for the muzzleloader season. Applications for this muzzleloader lottery must be received at the Myrtle Grove WMA no later than Mon., Oct. 1, with the lottery drawing to be held on Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
Several hunt dates will be available at Billingsley for the firearm season, including Nov. 24, Nov. 28, Dec. 1 and Dec. 5, with all applications due at the Myrtle Grove WMA no later than Fri., Nov. 2. Firearm hunters for the Billingsley Tract will be selected by lottery at 1 p.m. on Nov. 5.
Special zones have been set up on each property for mobility-impaired hunters who have a permit to hunt from their vehicle.
Available hunting dates for the Rosaryville State Park deer lottery are: Nov. 27 and 29, and Dec. 1, 4 and 6. All applications for the Rosaryville hunt must be received at the Myrtle Grove WMA no later than Fri., Nov. 2; the lottery drawing will be held at 1 pm on Nov. 5.
The managed hunt dates at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center will be Nov. 24, 26, and 30, and Dec. 1, 3, 7, and 8. All applications for the Smithsonian hunt must be received at the Myrtle Grove WMA no later than Fri., Oct. 5; this lottery drawing will take place at 1 pm on Oct. 9.
The muzzleloader hunt at Billingsley will permit all legal muzzleloaders. The firearm hunts at all three properties will be limited to the use of shotguns with rifled slugs only. All hunters must utilize tree stands at least 10 feet above the ground. Every applicant selected must have a portable tree stand. Hunting will be allowed from a half hour before sunrise until 2 p.m. and all regular muzzleloader and firearm rules and regulations will apply.
All deer taken during the managed hunts in Southern Maryland will be independent of the firearm and muzzleloader season bag limits for Region C. However, bonus stamps will be required, and all other regulations for deer seasons, including the order in which deer may be taken in Region C will apply.
To apply, hunters must have a valid Hunter Safety Certificate, a valid 2001-2002 shooter qualification card, and a current hunting license number. Hunters must submit applications, found on Page 31 of the Guide to Hunting & Trapping in Maryland 2001-2002. Applications must be received at the Myrtle Grove WMA by the dates noted above. Address applications to: DNR's Wildlife Division Office, (Billingsley Muzzleloader Hunt) or (Billingsley Firearms Hunt) or (Smithsonian Hunt) or (Rosaryville Hunt) 5625 Myrtle Grove Road, La Plata.
A separate application is required for each of these hunts. There is no fee to apply for the drawing. Each hunter may submit only one application for the muzzleloader hunt and one for each of the firearm hunts. Hunting parties wishing to hunt on the same date may submit up to three applications stapled together.
