Dorthea Taylor and George Murphy were at the airport in Willow, Alaska. George is a well-known bush pilot in the area, and had gone to get the couple's dogs. Dorthea was waiting in the truck. George looked up and saw a moose, the moose had George in its sights and was charging at him. George knew he had to get to that truck, otherwise he was in big trouble.
The moose was faster than George and bowled him over as he charged. Then he stomped George, kicked and kept at it. Dorthea got out of the truck, and saw what was happening. She grabbed a shovel and went to fend off the moose from her husband of 40 years.
"He was way off. Jeez, he spotted me and he started to come right after me. So I was trying to get to the truck. But I didn't make it," he told the newspaper from his hospital bed in Alaska. "He started to stomp. Then he turned around and stomped again. And there was nothing I could do. I was afraid he was going to kill me."
Thanks to 85-year old Dorthea, George was not killed by the moose. After one good whack to the head with the shovel, Dorthea realized she could save her husband. She gave it everything she had, all 5 feet and 97 lbs of her went into the swinging of the shovel. The moose ended up leaving, being chased by the couple's dogs.
George ended up in the hospital with 7 broken ribs, wounded left leg, and a 6 inch gash to the head. Neither Dorthea nor George are upset with the moose, they say moose get hungry and angry this time of the year, and will attack unprovoked. What George has to say about his wife saving him; "Jeez, that was a pretty hard thing for anyone to do, to walk up on a moose like that," he said. "Heck, all she had was a shovel."
