
New York's Department of Environmental Conservation estimates there are around 7,000 bears in their state with an ever growing population. The bears have spread out into a variety of habitat and are even found in developed areas now.
Next weekend the bear season starts in upper New York. The Adirondacks is home to the largest portion of the state's population. With an estimated 4000 to 5000 bears in the area.
Opening next weekend, the early bear season runs through October 14th. Hunters are allowed to use bow, muzzleloader, handgun, shotgun, rifle or crossbow during this season. From The Wall Street Journal [2].
