The Arizona Game and Fish Department's Operation Game Thief (OGT) is offering a reward of up to $1,500 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the poaching of a bull elk north of Paulden.
The elk, believed to have been killed elsewhere and dumped, was found on State Land approximately ½ mile northeast of the Pilots Rest Airstrip on Feather Mountain Road. The elk is believed to have been killed between June 4th and 5th.
"This was definitely an unlawful killing," said Matt Pelto, an Arizona Game and Fish Region III (Kingman region) wildlife manager. "The animal was skinned and the head was removed. There is no current legal hunting season for elk."
Pelto said some evidence was collected and documented at the scene, but a starting point is needed.
"Right now we need someone to step forward and provide some information about who might be responsible for this criminal act," Pelto said. "If someone saw or heard anything, I encourage them to provide that information through OGT."
Pelto said someone may have overheard a conversation, seen a vehicle at the scene, or witnessed the actual poaching.
Anyone with information regarding this case, or any wildlife violation, should call the OGT hotline at (800) 352-0700. Web submissions can be reported via the Internet by going to www.azgfd.gov/thief . Identities will remain confidential. Anyone calling should reference case number 11-000699.
