What You Can Do to Save Hunting

There are a lot of things that work against the right to hunt. Despite what you may think, anti-hunting activists are not the worst threat to your hunting rights. Other hunters are far more dangerous than anti-hunters. While anti-hunters may cast a few votes against hunting access etc. they are offset by those of us who hunt and vote. But there is a huge pool of people who neither support or campaign against hunting.

This pool of mostly neutral people can be swayed one way or another by the way that they perceive hunting. By representing hunting in a negative light we give votes to the ant-hunting crowd. But by showing hunters as safe, responsible, and respectful we can win votes in support of hunting.

Just as when you wore a uniform (police, military, boy scout, etc.) you represent the organization you are in to those around you – when you wear hunting clothes – camo, orange, or red and black plaid – you are representing “Hunters” to everyone who sees you.

When you go in the grocery store, gas station, or anywhere else dressed in your hunting gear (even cast off old hunting gear that you no longer worry about scent control on) recognize that you are identified as a hunter by the non-hunting public.

Try hard to make a good impression. Hold the door for others, be polite, and say thank you. Don’t give an anti-hunter any ammunition. Don’t tip a person neutral on hunting toward an anti-hunter attitude by being rude or crude or thoughtless.

They are watching and what you do and how you do it will affect not only voting on hunting issues, but very personal decisions like whether to allow hunters access to their property. So be alert to it and please be polite to protect all of us.
