Yukon Permit Applications Available Now
Environment Yukon now has applications available for Yukon residents who want to enter the permit hunt lottery for moose, caribou, sheep, goat, deer or elk in a permit area, Environment Minister John Edzerza announced.
"Permit hunt draws limit the number of animals that can be harvested by licenced hunters, ensuring wildlife populations are sustainable and ecosystems remain healthy," Edzerza said. "While we are fortunate in Yukon to have many areas where moose and caribou are plentiful, we do need to limit licenced hunters in those areas where game populations are small."
Hunters must submit their application by Friday, June 18, with the draw to take place that weekend. Permits will be mailed to successful applicants during the week of June 21. The number of sheep, goat, moose, deer, and caribou permits available is the same as last year.
There is no longer a permit hunt draw for bison. Information about the bison hunting season and locations will be released shortly.
This year a total of 89 elk permits will be made available, up from 50 last year. Of these, 71 will be available through the Yukon government's permit hunt draw, with the remainder allocated to resident hunters by First Nations governments. Elk permits will still be specific to a herd, area and season. The seasons are Sept 1 to March 31 for the buffer zones and September 15 to October 15 for the core zones. The permits are available as follows:
There is no limit on the number of elk permits available for hunting in the exclusion zone, where this year's season runs from June 1 to March 31, 2011.
The permit hunt data sheet for all species and detailed maps are available on the Environment Yukon website at www.environmentyukon.gov.yk.ca and at all Environment Yukon district offices. The names of all hunters drawn in the permit lottery will be posted on the website.
Yukon hunters are reminded that even if they have a valid permit for an area, they still need to obtain written permission from a First Nation to hunt on Category A Settlement Land. Season dates for each permit area are noted on the permit along with the area it may be used.
