Wyoming Residents Required to Provide SSN for Hunting License
Beginning in 2011, Wyoming residents applying for or purchasing hunting or fishing licenses will be required to provide their Social Security Number to comply with a mandate of the federal Social Security Act.
To comply with the federal child support enforcement section of the Act, the Social Security Number of any applicant for a recreational license must be recorded on the application. The Act requires the same information for professional, occupational, marriage and driver's licenses.
In 2007, in response to information provided by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, the State of Wyoming Department of Family Services filed a request with the Department of Health and Human Services for an exemption to comply with this requirement and was granted a three year grace period effective until Dec. 31, 2010. The exemption was granted with the stipulation that the State have a system in place by Jan. 1, 2011 that meets the requirements of the Social Security Act.
WGFD Chief Fiscal officer Rich Reynders said the Social Security Number will not be printed on the license and will not be available to the public. "The Game and Fish will not disclose the Social Security Number to any entity, but the number will be used to match up court orders from past due child support records from the Department of Family Services as required for child support enforcement," Reynders said. "It will not be accessible through any Department online internet license application or sale system."
Public meetings on the regulation are now underway at various locations throughout the state. Written comments will be accepted through June 22 by mailing Wyoming Game and Fish Department, 3030 Energy Lane, Casper, WY 82604. Copies of the proposed regulation are available at the same address in accordance with Chapter 1 of the Game and Fish Commission Regulations.
All comments will be presented to the Game and Fish Commission prior to their July 28-29 meeting in Saratoga.
