Wyoming Meetings for Black Bear and Bison Hunting

During the next few weeks the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is holding information-gathering meetings and has opened a comment period to gather public input on the 2008-2010 black bear hunting seasons and regulations and the Jackson bison herd population objective.

Black bear regulation proposed changes involve special archery season, clarification of bait site registrations, definition of processed bait, prohibited bait and unprocessed bait. A new hunt area (Area 33) with its own quota and season dates is proposed for the area just south of Casper. This area would be the north end of the current Area 7. Season dates in Areas 11 and 19 would also be altered slightly. Additionally, changes to hunt area boundaries, annual female mortality quotas and season dates may be made as a result of further data analysis, which will be completed prior to the public information gathering meetings.

The Jackson bison herd is one of the two areas in Wyoming where bison are designated as wildlife. The present population objective is 350-400, which was set in 1998. The department is recommending increasing the population objective to 500.

Interested parties are encouraged to attend one of the meetings for more detailed discussion on proposed changes. All meetings start at 7 p.m.
