The public will have an opportunity to comment for the record on a Department of Natural Resources proposal to lift the sunset provision currently in place on the December four-day antlerless gun deer hunt in areas north of Highway 8.

Lifting the sunset provision would mean the hunt could take place north of Highway 8 in future years. Clarifications to the special youth gun deer hunt and deer hunting in state parks are also on the hearing agenda.

The times and locations of the hearings are:

  • January 16, Rhinelander - Auditorium, James Williams Middle School, 915 Acacia Lane.
  • January 17, Park Falls - Board Room, Park Falls City Hall, 400 Fourth Ave. South.
  • January 23, Fitchburg - Gathering Waters Room, DNR South Central Region Hdqrs., 3911 Fish Hatchery Road.

In 2006, the Department of Natural Resources and a broad coalition of hunting groups requested the Natural Resources Board to include areas north of highway 8 in the state’s December antlerless gun deer hunt. A legislative review committee subsequently requested that the department add a one-year sunset provision to the hunt north of the Hwy. 8 line and review the results of the expanded hunt with citizens following the 2006 hunting season.

Additional information on the hearings can be found on the Department of Natural Resources Hearings and Meetings page of the DNR Web site.
