Wildlife Commission Schedules Wild Turkey Hunting Clinics in Raleigh, North Carolina
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, in conjunction with the National Wild Turkey Federation, will hold two free turkey hunting clinics at the Centennial Campus Center for Wildlife Education, just in time for the spring turkey hunting season.
The first clinic, an introductory session for novice turkey hunters, will be held March 15. More experienced hunters will have their own clinic on March 22. Both are scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the center’s auditorium.
“These free clinics offer excellent preparation for the upcoming spring turkey season in April,” said Ann May, a wildlife education specialist with the Wildlife Commission. “While participants will not be firing live rounds, there will be plenty of practice with turkey calls. And the educational and safety components of the clinics will benefit everyone who attends at either skill level.”
There is no charge, but space is limited and pre-registration is required.
Topics to be covered include:
- Wild turkey biology, habits and habitats
- Types of calls, methods of calling and hands-on practice
- Scouting and hunting techniques
- Equipment, ammo and firearms
- Safety and hunting requirements
The North Carolina chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation has been a valued partner to the Commission in the reintroduction of the wild turkey in North Carolina. Before the 1970s, wild turkeys were scarce in North Carolina, with only about 2,000 birds. Today, there are more than 150,000 birds from the mountains to the coast, and wild turkeys are one of the most popular game animals.
The Centennial Campus Center for Wildlife Education is one of four learning centers operated by the Wildlife Commission. The center is located on the first floor of the Wildlife Commission headquarters at 1751 Varsity Drive on N.C. State University’s Centennial Campus in Raleigh. Interactive exhibits at the center highlight Piedmont wildlife species and habitats.
