California SHARE Program Hunts a Success

An unusual partnership between the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) and private landowners has created new pig hunting opportunities in Yolo County. Through the Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Program, the first state-sponsored pig hunt on private lands was held in December.

California Joice Island Pig Hunt Applications Due Feb. 10th

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will hold a permit-only hunt to control a small population of wild pigs on Joice Island Unit in Solano County. Joice Island, which is part of the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area, is a 2,150-acre wetland area consisting of thick cattails, tules, brush and standing water.

The first weekend of this hunting opportunity has been reserved for apprentice hunters. Two-day pig hunt permits will be issued by drawing only for the following weekends:

West Virginia Archery Seasons Open Oct. 16th

The 2010 West Virginia big game archery seasons open Oct. 16, 2010, offering some of the best deer and bear hunting opportunities in the eastern United States, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

Deer – The statewide traditional deer archery season opens on Saturday, Oct. 16, and runs through Dec. 31. Bowhunters are reminded that they have until Oct. 15 to purchase the additional archery stamps (Class RB/RRB). Up to three deer may be taken statewide during this season.

South Carolina Coastal Archery Hunt Opportunities Available

Numerous opportunities exist on about 387,000 acres of wildlife management areas all along the coast for the archer looking to harvest a deer this fall.

Along the upper half of the coast in Horry County, Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve Wildlife Management Area (HP/WMA), Waccamaw River HP/WMA, and Little Pee Dee HP River Complex have a combined total of 24,966 acres that include an archery only season in September and/or October. The Santee Coastal Reserve WMA located near McClellanville offers archery only deer hunting on the mainland during the month of November.

Michigan Sportsmen Want Wild Boar Declared an Invasive Species

Michigan sportsmen and women will join members of the Michigan agriculture community today in supporting an administrative order that would list feral swine/wild boar (Sus scrofa) as a prohibited invasive species in Michigan. State law requires the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) to list a non-native species as prohibited if it could potentially harm human health, severely harm agricultural, natural, or silvicultural resources, and effective management controls are not available.

Many Texas Hunt Applications Due August 12th

Hunters hoping to take advantage of economical quality hunts on state-managed lands are reminded of upcoming application deadlines. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will be offering adult and youth only hunts by special drawing for a wide variety of species as part of its Public Hunting Program.

Applications for several hunt categories, including all archery only and crossbow hunts, pronghorn, and TPWD private lands hunts are due by 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12. All gun deer and youth deer hunt category applications must be received by 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2.

California DFG Offers Hunts on the Chimineas Unit

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is offering draws for three controlled hunting opportunities on the Chimineas Unit of the Carrizo Plains Ecological Reserve in San Luis Obispo County. Twenty-five permits will be drawn for each hunt and each permit is good for two hunters.

Florida Offers Several Summer Hog Hunt Opportunities

Because of an abundance of wild hogs on portions of Ochlockonee River and Joe Budd Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in Northwest Florida, several hunting opportunities will be available during the coming months in an effort to reduce hog populations.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has quota permits available for hog-dog hunts on the Joe Budd area and still hunts for the Ochlockonee River WMA during July, August and September.

Wisconsin Adopts New Rules for Control of Feral Swine and Wolf-Dog Hybrids

Rules going into effect this summer are designed to prevent new introductions of three invasive species. Under the rules effective July 1, 2010, people must have a license to possess wolf-dog hybrids, feral or wild swine, and mute swans in captivity.

Also as of July 1, it is illegal to release any of these species into the wild and such releases can result in penalties of up to $1,142, as well as restitution costs for any damage caused by these animals.
