Kansas Deer Hunters: Tag Your Deer Properly

Nonresidents should know laws regarding transport through other states, as well
The regular Kansas firearm deer season is winding down, but archery season remains open the rest of the year, and several whitetail antlerless-only seasons will be held in January. After a deer is taken, hunters must dress the deer out, cool it down, and get it to a place for processing — all of which is hard work. But before moving the deer, the hunter must fill out his or her carcass tag and attach it to the deer. There is more to this than meets eye.

Ohio Deer-gun Hunting Continues December 17-18
Ohio's popular deer-gun season will run an additional weekend, Saturday and Sunday, December 17-18, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.
 
The extra weekend days were added in 2006 in response to requests from hunters for more weekend time to hunt. Hunters can use a legal muzzleloader, handgun or shotgun from one half-hour before sunrise until sunset on December 17-18.
Maryland's Late Muzzleloader Deer Season Opens December 17

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will open Maryland’s late muzzleloader season for deer December 17 through December 31, 2011. The early winter season is popular with deer hunters and is an important part of deer management in Maryland.

“Muzzleloader hunters contribute positively to deer management in Maryland because of their willingness to take female deer,” said DNR’s Deer Project Leader, Brian Eyler. “Harvesting females is essential for effective deer management and it is always challenging to remove enough to meet our population goals.”

Illinois Firearm Deer Season Closes with Preliminary Harvest of 97,760
Deer Hunting Continues with Archery, Muzzleloader, Late-Winter/CWD Seasons 

Firearm deer hunters in Illinois took a preliminary total of 97,760 deer during the seven-day firearm deer season on Nov. 18-20 and Dec. 1-4, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) announced today.  This year’s preliminary firearm season harvest total compares with the 98,944 deer taken during the 2010 firearm season. 

It's Not Too Soon to Enter Idaho's Super Hunt

The first drawing is still several months away, but it's not too early to enter Idaho Fish and Game's Super Hunt.

The Super Hunt is a fund-raising drawing for 40 big game tags. The tags are handed out to winners in two drawings. Entries are drawn for elk, deer, and pronghorn and moose tags. Winners can participate in any open hunt in the state for deer, elk, pronghorn or moose. That includes general hunts and controlled hunts.

Additional Deer Licenses Must be Purchased Prior to Start of Muzzleloader Season December 11 in West Virginia

West Virginia resident and nonresident muzzleloader deer hunters have until Dec. 11 to purchase additional deer muzzleloader hunting licenses, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

Rockport, New Jersey WMA Refuge Status Lifted for Deer and Bear Hunting

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife is informing hunters that the refuge status for the Rockport WMA will be lifted to allow deer and bear hunting beginning December 5, 2011. As always, the Game Farm proper (area around the pens and buildings) remains closed to all hunting. The pheasant refuge status for the 380-acre area posted as restricted remains and is closed to pheasant hunting. It is hoped that additional pheasants can be recovered in the coming months as breeding stock for next year's production.
