Florida Established Public Hunting Areas Do Not Have 7-day Antlerless Deer Season

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reminds hunters that antlerless deer season does not apply on FWC-managed lands that are part of its public hunting system.

Most of these 163 public hunting areas were established as wildlife management areas, but others were established as wildlife and environmental areas, national wildlife refuges, military bases, public-use areas, public small-game hunting areas and places such as the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes Area.

Arkansas Flood Zones Reopen for Christmas Deer Hunts

Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Director Loren Hitchcock has authorized opening the state’s private land flood prone zones in advance of the upcoming modern gun, muzzleloader and youth deer hunts. Last week, commissioners gave the director of the AGFC the authority to open any closed flood prone region based on the recommendation of the chief of the wildlife management division.

Several areas around the state have been closed to deer hunting due to high water. Reopening the zones will give hunters more opportunity to help control Arkansas's growing deer herd.

Iowa Late Muzzleloader Deer Season Preview

No sooner do Iowa’s shotgun season deer hunters hang up their gear, the late muzzleloader hunters head into the woods.

About 32,000 late season muzzleloader hunters don’t have to compete with the crowds of shotgun season, but they do face the prospect of colder weather and more snow during their December 19-January 10 season.

Nelson County, Kentucky Man Charged With 88 Counts Of Deer-related Violations

A Nelson County man is facing multiple wildlife violations in an ongoing investigation by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

Kevin Barnette, 43, of Bardstown, is facing 88 counts of illegally taking or possessing deer or their antlers. Eighty-five of the charges are related to possessing illegal antlers. He also is charged with one count of killing over the limit of antlered deer during the current deer season.

Maryland’s Firearm Deer Season Reopens in Region B

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will reopen Firearm Deer Season for white-tailed and sika deer in Deer Management Region B on January 6 and 7, 2012.

This two-day deer season provides additional opportunities for landowners to manage deer numbers while offering hunters a late season recreational opportunity. The firearm season is closed in Deer Management Region A (Allegany, Garrett, and western Washington counties).

2011 New Hampshire Deer and Bear Hunting Season Results

The preliminary numbers for New Hampshire's recent deer and bear hunting seasons are in.  The estimated statewide deer kill for New Hampshire’s 2011 season was 11,167 deer, up 14% from 2010 (9,759 deer) and the highest harvest since 2007.  It appears that the last weeks of the season were quite successful, because as late as Thanksgiving weekend, the estimated take was running just 4% above 2010 levels at that point in the season.

Coshocton County, Ohio Leads State in Weekend Deer-Gun Harvest Numbers

80 percent of Ohio’s Deer Hunters Choose the Phone or Internet for Checking Game 

Hunters harvested an additional 16,766 deer during the extra weekend of gun hunting, December 17-18, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. 

New West Virginia Senior Lifetime Hunting and Fishing License Available

The new Senior Lifetime Hunting, Trapping and Fishing License, which becomes effective January 1, 2012, is now available for purchase, according to DNR Director Frank Jezioro.  The one-time fee for the Class XS License is $25.

Minnesota DNR Cites 144 With Baiting; Seizes 134 Firearms/Bows

Conservation officer weekly activity reports confirm what officials with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) already suspected: Deer baiting was pervasive during the 2011 big game season.

DNR conservation officers issued 144 citations, issued 24 warnings and seized 134 firearms/bows in baiting relation investigations during the 2011 bow, firearms and muzzleloader seasons. It’s the highest number of baiting citations issued during the deer hunting seasons since the DNR began tracking these violations in 1991.
