West Virigina’s Mountaineer Food Bank Receives $75,000 Donation from 2011 One Shot Deer Hunt Event

West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Director Frank Jezioro has presented a check to the Mountaineer Food Bank representing $75,000 raised during the fifth annual Governor’s One Shot Deer Hunt, held in December 2011. The money will go to the Hunters Helping the Hungry Program (HHH), administered by WVDNR, to distribute venison to needy families across the state through the Mountaineer Food Bank and other agencies. The donation was made at the Food Bank’s headquarters in Gassaway, Braxton County, on May 10.
Research Suggests Many West Virginia Coyotes Feed on Deer

A recent study conducted by West Virginia scientists has put forth evidence that as much as 60 percent of coyotes feed on deer. The conclusions come after a 20-month study that took samples of 969 coyotes’ stomach contents and manure samples across different regions of West Virginia.
West Virginia Spring Gobbler Survey and Poaching Information

The spring turkey hunting season in West Virginia begins April 23 and runs through May 19. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR), in cooperation with the West Virginia Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), is preparing to conduct its annual survey of spring gobbler hunters and is seeking hunters to participate.
West Virginia DNR Fish Health Survey Discovers Presence of Largemouth Bass Virus in Four Lakes

Recent fish health surveys conducted by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources revealed the presence of largemouth bass virus (LMBV) in four West Virginia lakes, according to Bret Preston, assistant chief of the Wildlife Resources Section.

West Virginia trappers are reminded that the various trapping seasons for affected species will be ending soon, according to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
New West Virginia Senior Lifetime Hunting and Fishing License Available

The new Senior Lifetime Hunting, Trapping and Fishing License, which becomes effective January 1, 2012, is now available for purchase, according to DNR Director Frank Jezioro.  The one-time fee for the Class XS License is $25.
Deer Hunters in West Virginia Harvest 59,835 Bucks During the Buck Firearms Season

Preliminary data collected from game checking stations across the state indicate deer hunters in West Virginia harvested 59,835 bucks during the two-week buck firearms season, which ran from November 21 through December 3, according to Frank Jezioro, Director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR). The 2011 buck harvest was 38 percent more than the 2010 harvest of 43,461.

Additional Deer Licenses Must be Purchased Prior to Start of Muzzleloader Season December 11 in West Virginia

West Virginia resident and nonresident muzzleloader deer hunters have until Dec. 11 to purchase additional deer muzzleloader hunting licenses, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
West Virginia DNR Law Enforcement Requests Public Help in Deer Slaughter Case

At least 13 deer were shot, killed and left lying on the ground in the Fairmont area during the month prior to the start of the deer firearms seasons this week, and the Law Enforcement Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is requesting help from the public to solve this case. The deer were found in the Apple Valley / Boothsville area, according to Capt. William Persinger of the WVDNR District 1 Office in Farmington.
Bear Poaching Convictions in Preston County by West Virginia DNR Law Enforcement

A father and son from Terra Alta, W.Va., have been convicted of several violations of West Virginia’s wildlife laws following a two-week black bear poaching/killing investigation in Preston County.

The investigation was conducted by Natural Resources Police Officer Paul Ferguson after he received information from a confidential informant about a bear poaching. That investigation resulted in the arrest of Arnold Dalton, age 77, and his son Eric Dalton, age 47.
