DNR Stresses Scouting
With hunting season upon us, the Division of Natural Resources encourages hunters to scout their favorite areas, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Division of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Section. Scouting is an enjoyable way to spend time afield before hunting season opens and provides useful information for the sportsman.
Additional Deer Archery License Deadline Oct. 12th
West Virginia resident and nonresident archery deer hunters are reminded that they must purchase their additional deer archery licenses (Class RB or RRB) prior to October 12, 2002, the opening day of archery season, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Section.
2002 Big Buck Contest
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the West Virginia Izaak Walton League, and the West Virginia Bowhunters Association are again sponsoring the Big Buck Contest for deer taken between October 12 and December 31, 2002, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Division of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Section. Plaques will be awarded to four overall highest scores in gun typical and non-typical and bow typical and non-typical classes at the National Hunting and Fishing Day Celebration held at Stonewall Jackson State Park in September 2003.
Anterless Deer Application Deadline Aug 17th
Hunters wishing to participate in this year's limited resident antlerless deer season are reminded their applications must be received by the Division of Natural Resources before the close of business on August 17, 2002, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Wildlife Resources Section.
Applications Available for Controlled Blennerhassett Island State Park Deer Hunts
Joint planning efforts between the Parks and Recreation, Wildlife and Law Enforcement Sections of the Division of Natural Resources and E.I. Dupont, which owns Blennerhassett Island and leases it to the State Parks System, have resulted in a plan for a controlled antlerless deer hunt on October 28, 29 and 30 and November 7, 8, and 9 on Blennerhassett Island State Park, located on the Ohio River near Parkersburg, WV.
2002 Antlerless Deer and Wild Boar Apps Available
Applications for the 2002 Antlerless Deer and Wild Boar seasons are now available at all West Virginia hunting and fishing license agents, DNR district offices, Elkins Operations Center, and Charleston Office, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Division of Natural Resources? Wildlife Resources Section. These applications are for hunting opportunities in counties, or areas, of the state where wildlife biologists have determined that a limited number of permits are necessary.
Natural Resources Commission Quarterly Meeting
The next meeting of the West Virginia Natural Resources Commission will be held Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Flatwoods Days Inn in Braxton County. The public is invited to attend and make comments.
Record Bow Bear Hunt; Firearms Bear Hunt Down
Bear archery hunters set a new record during the 2001 bear archery season, taking 463 bears which surpasses the previous record harvest of 424 in 1999. Bear firearms hunters harvested 781 animals during the 2001 gun season. This figure is 24% below the record bear firearms harvest of 1,024 set in 2000. A total of 1,244 bears were harvested during the combined bear archery and firearms seasons which is 6% below the record 1,328 bears that were taken in 2000.
Bear Gun Season Opens December 3
The states bear population remains high and a good harvest is expected; however, the harvest may not reach the record gun harvest of last season. A large number of bears are carrying radio collars, radio implants, ear tags, and lip tattoos for DNR studies. Hunters are asked to return monitoring equipment if they harvest a bear carrying the equipment.
Special October Deer Hunt Applications Available
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in Green Bank, West Virginia, has announced that applications are now available and are being accepted for the special October controlled deer hunt at the NRAO site. This controlled hunt is organized and planned in cooperation with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR).
