Workshop Series at Henges Shooting Range, Missouri Aims to Improve Turkey Hunting Skills

The 2012 spring turkey season runs from April 16 through May 6 with the spring youth turkey season running March 31 and April 1. The Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Jay Henges Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center is offering a series of workshops during the month of March to help hunters get more out of the upcoming spring turkey season. These include special presentations by the state’s turkey biologist, turkey calling and hunting techniques, and shotgun patterning.

Greenfield Township Youth Wins National Junior Wild Turkey Calling Contest

Hunter Wallis, 14, of Greenfield Township, Pa., earned the extreme honor of being crowned a champion turkey caller.

Wallis demonstrated his remarkable talent in front of the huge crowd and was named the victor in the Junior Division at the Mossy Oak/NWTF Grand National Turkey Calling Championships in Nashville, Tenn., Feb. 12. Wallis also won the Junior Division in 2011.

Georgia DNR Hosts Shotgun Patterning Days to Prep for Turkey Season

The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division and the Georgia State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) are hosting “Give It A Shot!,” shotgun patterning days in February and March. Choke tubes and ammunition options will be available to test with your shotgun.  

137,000 Permits Issued Through Drawing for Wisconsin's Spring 2012 Turkey Season

Turkey permits issued by the Department of Natural Resources through the spring turkey preference drawing numbered 137,598 for Wisconsin’s 2012 spring wild turkey season. The department printed and mailed postcard notifications to successful applicants, which should be arriving within the next few weeks.

Pennsylvania Hunters Can Purchase Special Spring Gobbler Tag Now

Pennsylvania hunters who would like the opportunity to harvest a second spring gobbler can purchase a second spring gobbler tag until midnight on April 20, according to Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe.

In fact, thanks to the Pennsylvania Automated License System (PALS), hunters can purchase a second spring gobbler tag at any issuing agent or through the agency’s website.

Minnesota DNR, NWTF Mentored Youth Turkey Applications Due Soon

The application deadline is midnight Monday, Feb. 13 for first-time youth turkey hunters, ages 12 to 17, who are looking to go afield this spring and learn from an experienced National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) volunteer, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Mississippi's Turkey Season Changes on South Delta WMAs

Flood events along the Mississippi River have had significant consequences for wild turkey populations within the Delta.  Although most adult birds survived flood waters by moving to higher ground or treetops for extended periods; flood events during 2008, 2009, and 2011 all occurred during the spring nesting season.  Wild turkeys nest on the ground; therefore, very little reproduction occurred in the Delta during these years.  Conversely, reproduction was above average across the region during 2010.
