Virus Kills Wild Turkeys in Southeast Montana

Near the small town of Olive, ten wild turkeys were found to have died from a viral infection identified as Avian Pox. Avian Pox is usually found in localized populations and is most commonly contracted from domestic poultry. It is transmitted from bird to bird once it is established in the population. It is not always fatal; however, in this case the “chicken pox” type rash broke out internally in the mouths and throats of the birds preventing them from eating or drinking and impairing their breathing.

The 2012 spring wild turkey lottery has been held and more than 700 licenses remain in nine units. The governor’s proclamation allows a maximum of two licenses, and hunters who did not apply in the first drawing are also eligible.

Missouri Turkey Hunting Clinic Open to Youths Ages 9 Through 15

Hunters age 9 through 15 who want to learn about turkey hunting can register for a youth turkey hunting clinic March 24.

The clinic is cosponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation and Everhart’s Wilderness Lodge. It will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the lodge, which is northwest of Clinton.

Michigan's Leftover Spring Turkey Licenses Go on Sale March 12

The Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters that leftover spring turkey licenses go on sale to unsuccessful applicants on Monday, March 12 at 10 a.m. Licenses may be purchased by any hunter beginning Monday, March 19 at 10 a.m., including those who did not participate in the application process.

Take a Kid Turkey Hunting in Florida

March 10-11 is Youth Spring Turkey Hunt Weekend in Florida. This Saturday-Sunday hunt, which occurs the weekend prior to the opening of spring turkey season in each hunting zone, was established in 2011 on private property. It was such a huge success that this year the two-day hunt also is included on 78 of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) wildlife management areas (WMAs).

Outlook Promising for Texas' Spring Turkey Hunting

Despite lingering dry conditions in some parts of Texas, prospects for this year’s spring turkey season remain promising, thanks to a carryover of mature gobblers, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists.

Rio Grande spring turkey hunting season in the 54-county South Zone runs March 17-April 29 with special youth-only weekends set for March 10–11 and May 5–6. In the 101 counties comprising the North Zone, the season opens March 31 and runs through May 13 with special youth-only weekends set for March 24–25 and May 19–20.
