Oklahoma Controlled Hunts Application Online Now

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation's popular controlled hunts program is open to online applicants now.

The controlled hunts program offers once-in-a-lifetime elk and antelope hunts, highly sought-after buck hunts, and a range of other quality deer and turkey hunting opportunities through randomized drawings that only cost sportsmen $5 to enter. Opportunities offered through the program include hunts on Department or other government-owned or managed lands where unrestricted hunting would pose safety concerns or where overharvest might occur.

New York Spring Turkey Season Opens May 1, Youth Turkey Hunting Weekend Set for April 21-22

The 2012 spring turkey season opens May 1 in all of upstate New York lying north of the Bronx-Westchester County boundary and the annual Youth Turkey Hunting Weekend is set for April 21-22, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens today reminded hunters. The youth turkey hunt is open in all of upstate New York and Suffolk County.

Early Spring Presents Turkey Hunting Challenges in Indiana

As Indiana’s spring turkey season approaches, DNR wildlife research biologist Steve Backs said hunters should plan to work a little harder this year.

Spring turkey season begins with the youth season April 21-22. The regular spring turkey season is April 25 through May 13.

Backs is forecasting a spring turkey harvest of 11,000, plus or minus 1,000. His prediction is about 6 percent less than the 11,669 birds harvested in 2011, and 20 percent less than the 2010 spring harvest, when hunters bagged a record 13,742 turkeys.

Illinois Youth Wild Turkey Season Harvest is a New Record

Young hunters in the Illinois youth wild turkey season harvested a preliminary record of 1,300 birds, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) announced today.  The 2012 season dates were March 31 and April 1 for the south zone and April 7-8 for the north zone. The record harvest surpasses the previous record for the youth turkey harvest of 748 set in 2011.  This year, 4,100 youth turkey permits were issued, including 137 for special hunt areas, compared to 3,718 last year with 131 for special hunt areas.

Vermont’s Spring Turkey Hunting Starts Soon

Vermont offers some of the best turkey hunting in New England according to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. In 2011, hunters took more than 4,700 turkeys in both the youth weekend and regular May 1-31 seasons.
