The Department of Natural Resources Area Wildlife headquarters in Tower registered 52% more deer through the first 10 days of the 2003 Minnesota firearms deer season (through Sunday 11/16) in Northern St Louis and Lake Counties.

Hunters continue to report high deer numbers and good deer activity following the second weekend. Weather and hunting conditions were good throughout the week contributing to the harvest. The snowstorm early in the week provided for excellent tracking conditions.

Six local big game registration stations (Tower, Ely, Babbitt, Embarrass and Cook) registered 3628 deer through the 2nd weekend compared to 2387 in 2002. Hunters report increased success with the new either sex permit options available in most Tower Area deer permit areas (115, 175 and 107). "Management permits" are still available in these units and can be purchased at any time during the season. This is new in 2003. There is no waiting period after purchase. Limit is one per hunter.

Hunters hunting in permit areas 116, 122 and 127 in Northern Lake County, are also finding increased deer numbers and a healthy deer population in most areas. This is the first season with antlerless permits in permit area 116. All 3 permit areas are designated "Lottery"in 2003. Successful applicants have an either sex permit and can harvest a buck or an antlerless deer. There are no "Management permits" in these permit areas.

The 2003 firearms deer season continues through Sunday November 23rd.

The 2003 muzzleloader season begins Saturday November 29th and closes Sunday December 14th. Permit areas 116, 126 and 127 are (still) closed to muzzleloader hunting to protect wintering deer concentrations in the Northeast Minnesota border country.
