The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission recently set tentative upland game bird, deer, elk, antelope harvest quotas for the 2005 hunting season. Comments will be accepted through June 13.

Here is a summary of the tentative quotas:

Upland Game Birds Sage Grouse * The only proposed change for 2005 upland bird season is a reduction in the sage grouse bag and possession limit. For 2005, hunters could take two sage grouse per day, and have four in possession. This change is recommended based on the recently adopted Montana Sage Grouse Plan and 2005 lek counts that indicate a restrictive harvest package is needed.

Fall Turkey * In the Bitterroot Valley, the 285-50 permit quota for fall turkey, is proposed to increase from 150 to 300 permits valid on the west side of the valley.

Deer

* No changes are recommended for FWP Regions 1 (Kalispell), 3 (Bozeman), or 5 (Billings). A significant reduction in resident and antlerless mule deer 2nd B licenses in FWP Region 7 is the result of a recommended move from a liberal to a standard deer adaptive havest management package.
