Tag Sale Deadline Approaches for Early August Hunts

It may be hot, but for many hunters now is the time to think about upcoming seasons and purchasing tags. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife reminds hunters that July 31 is the deadline for hunting seasons that begin Aug. 1.

The deadline to purchase tags for all limited entry, or “controlled,” hunts and most general season big game hunts is the day before the earliest hunt begins. In early August, controlled seasons begin for private land elk hunts, pronghorn, bighorn sheep and one eastern Oregon archery deer hunt at Hart Mountain. The general seasons for cougar and fall bear begins Aug. 1. Unlike other big game species, the tag sale deadline for cougar and bear is Sept. 30, which is after those seasons begin.

Hunters should check the 2005 Oregon Big Game Regulations and be sure of the start dates for upcoming hunts so they do not miss their opportunity to hunt. The nearest ODFW office also can provide information to hunters looking for hunting season start dates.
